I'm running Kubuntu Gutsy, I've tried installing from the repositories and also now using the downloaded installer. I launch the game using the icon on the desktop or ./pokerth.sh from the command line and the outcome is the same. I can see a pokerth process running but nothing actually displays on the screen. No error messages or anything.

Same problem here.. Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 - running the icon on the desktop loads the pokerth.sh only for a second or two in the system monitor, but the file quickly closes and nothing ever displays..
