MasterG84 created the topic: Poker Rule for Checking the River ?
ok now a question for all real poker pros and the one who think they are! :D

--> Is there a rule which says, that checking the Nuts on the river is forbidden?

Reason: doing nothing to prefer a player

Yes that is quite true.

If you have the nut hand you must raise if there are other players before you in the betting round.
You can check if you are the first player in the round or no other bets have been made (ie an intended check raise play), but as soon as a player bets you must raise or call 'all in'.

I have been penalised in a cash tournament for breaking this rule (which at the time I was unaware of, as I was new to poker); my punishment was suspension from the table for 20 minutes, I still had to pay for the blinds.

In a tournament it's classed as collusion with another player, because the primary objective of tournament play is to knock other players out, so you must weaken or knock out the player when given the opportunity.

There is another collusion rule which should apply to PokerTH but can't be applied in practice, that is: in international tournaments only English is spoken.

Kind regards
Corvus

Sorry MasterG84, were you expecting a discussion?

You were a bit unlucky having someone who has actually come up against the rule, it doesn't come up all that often in real tournaments. In fact I'm the only person I know !

Maybe MasterG84 means the EPT Barcelona Main Event 2012?

This weekend i saw a repitition of this tournament in German TV.
There were only three players left at the final table.
Ilari Sahamies, Joni Jouhkimainen from Finland and from belarus Mikalai Pobal who wons the tournament.

There was one curious hand:
Joni Jouhkimainen vs Mikalai Pobal
Pobal get the nuts on the river. Jouhkimainen checks and Pobal dont realize that he has the best possible hand and checks too.
After that he gets a penalty and must leave the table for 20 minutes because the rules says that he must raise the nuts because there are other players before him in the betting round.

Thanks, but I'm still learning. Although I do play cash tournaments 2 or 3 times a week.

I've added to your karma ...
